When I was a little girl, my summers were spent at my grandmother’s home in South Georgia. We would pick blackberries and make a jelly that would last us until the next summer. Her round oak table would be covered with fresh sliced tomatoes, cucumbers in vinegar, hot biscuits, a hoecake, fried chicken cooked in a cast-iron skillet, and zipper peas that were picked that morning. As a necessity, we ate what was growing in the garden, and our table changed with the seasons. The meals were always deliciously simple, with an emphasis placed on fresh ingredients. As true as it was back then, I find peace in that simple pleasure that comes from a table surrounded by family and friends. I hope I can provide a table where people can gather and good things can happen. Good food is part of that story – you must provide the rest.
